Pocklington RUFC open its 2019-20 North 1 East league campaign, the 140th season of rugby at Pocklington, with a 1st XV home fixture against the newly promoted Yorkshire 1 champions, Moortown, on Saturday, kick-off 3.00 pm. The following day the Colts host a Sunday afternoon friendly v Malton & Norton, ko 1.00pm.
The rivalries between Pocklington and Leeds outfit Moortown go back many years. But the two clubs have not met at senior level in a league fixture since 2011. Moortown have now tracked Pocklington's rise through the divisions by winning two league championships in three years to arrive in North 1 East after an all conquering season in 2018-19.
Pocklington will be fielding a young side in 2019-20. There will be a core of experience up front, but elsewhere the team will be full of young talent that has come through the ranks at Percy Road. And a couple of retirements at the end of last season has been balanced by a clutch of returnees and newcomers coming down in the past couple of weeks, giving the squqd significantly more strength in depth than looked likely a month ago.
Saturday will also be a notable occasion off the pitch. Rugby has been played continuously in Pocklington since the first game between sides from the town and the school in November 1897. Saturday's game is sponsored by the Diogenes - the group of ex-players and supporters that meets regularly at Percy Road. And it is also Ladies Day for wives, girlfriends, partners and lady supporters, with the club president and his better half, Paul and Claire Rhodes, welcoming all ladies to the club with a free glass of prosecco.
Last Sunday morning saw an excellent turn out of mini and junior rugby players for the first registration day of the season. There was a steady stream of established youngsters and newcomers signing up for the forthcoming season, and it is the club's second registration and training Sunday this weekend from 10.30 am.
Pocklington has teams at every age level from Under 6 to Under 18, led by an experienced group of qualified coaches and managers. No previous rugby experience is needed, just come down, meet officials and give rugby a try, or contact junior chairman, Chris Clegg, tel 07950 775894, email firstname.lastname@example.org for further details.
The U18 Colts will play in the Yorkshire Premier Colts League this season, and league fixtures do not start until October. But they have organised a series of friendlies starting on Sunday (8 Sept) when Pocklington are at home to local rivals Malton & Norton, ko 1.00 pm.
