Pocklington RUFC start 2018 with a crucial home North Premier encounter against Birkenhead Park (kick off 2.15 pm).

Birkenhead are one of the country's oldest clubs, producing dozens of internationals and British Lions down the years, and they will be making their first visit to Pocklington.

Both clubs are struggling near the foot of the table, with Pocklington looking to build on the committed display they gave at Hull before Christmas. Birkenhead's performances and results also improved through December on the back of a number of new signings. When the sides met on Merseyside back in September it ended all square at 22-22, with Pocklington storming into a 22-3 interval lead before Birkenhead came back to level in the second half. Both sides then missed chances to win it at the death.

Also on Saturday, the Panthers face one of their biggest tasks so far in the Yorkshire Merit Chamionship when they are at home to table topping Sheffield Tigers. The Pilgrims go to York.

There is a full programme of mini and junior rugby on Sunday, with the minis in a triangular at Kilnwick Park and the Colts due to entertain Driffield (1.00 pm).
